Westcote Bell Pottery and Studio

Westcote Bell Pottery was established in 1983 in a small rural village south of London, England. Co-founders Vaughan Smith and Jacqueline M. Cohen are a husband and wife team. After 27 years exhibiting at shows in the United States and running a gallery in upstate New York, they decided to move to LaHave where Jackie has relatives. The studio and two showrooms are located in a 150 year old boat house that sits on the LaHave estuary. The building sits above the water on large pilings, creating a boat like feeling as you hear the waves crashing under the building. Beautifully situated, looking across the bay to Riverport, the studio welcomes visitors with daily demonstrations in various pottery techniques. The artwork and pottery displayed is all made on the premises and original pieces are available for purchase in all price ranges. Featuring whimsical landscapes and animal imagery, functional dinnerware, wash basins and tile, water colours, prints, books and note cards. Both are award winning artists with over 35 years experience. After visiting the pottery, why not enjoy lunch at the LaHave bakery before you take the LaHave cable ferry across the bay.

Wavewood Design Fine Art Gallery

Lunenburg county hosts a vibrant array of artists who are attracted by the unique charm, powerful landscapes and rugged shorelines of the area. So it’s no wonder that there is such a strong number of galleries all over the county. Thanks to a dream from Bonnie Misner and Kim Banks, there will be one more opening this month.

Both originally from the Annapolis Valley, Bonnie (who goes by “Bono”) is a recently-retired 35-year Laboratory Technologist in various hospitals including Kentville, Bridewater and Liverpool, while Kim spent many years running a Bed and Breakfast and Farmer’s Market in his five-generation family farm outside of Berwick. Wanting to be closer to the ocean, they eventually settled in East Berlin, a small community outside of Liverpool, NS. It was here that they began to let their artistic creativity flow, and Wavewood was born, which further led them to move to a house in Rose Bay, with a building on the property perfectly suited for their gallery. Inspired by Bono’s daughter, Lynn Misner (who owns Power House Art in Lunenburg), Bono started painting. She mostly works in oils, creating rich landscapes with a special interest in lighthouses and abandoned places. Kim, after years of working with his hands at the farm, has taken to creating impressive sculptures with found pieces of driftwood and rootwood. The uniquely shaped driftwood, washed upon the shores all around Nova Scotia, is transformed into incredible sculpture and furniture such as lamps, tables, benches, mirrors, and anything else Kim’s imagination will allow him to create. The gallery will also feature the work of several other artists, including Lynn Misner, Stephen Ernst, Beverlee Banks Beaudet, Claude Gendron (Quebec) Bruce Henderson (Cape Breton )and Maxine Marshall (Digby).  The gallery will include many diversification of fine art including, realism, expressionism, abstract, sculpture and many more.

It will be open during the Summer from Thursdays to Sundays, 11:00am - 5:00pm.

LaHave Island Marine Museum

Welcome to the LaHave Islands Marine Museum Website.
The LaHave Islands Marine Museum is a museum with artifacts and information on the history of the in-shore fisheries and life on the LaHave Islands in Nova Scotia, Canada. Through this website, you can learn about the LaHave Islands and the surrounding area. You can also see photographs of some of the artifacts we have on display at the museum.

In the past, the LaHave Islands was a small fishing community about 30 kilometers from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. It relied on fishing, both in-shore and off-shore, for its prosperity and it was hard to find someone who wasn’t involved in the fishing industry in their day to day lives.

Today, the fishing industry has died down and most of the homes on the islands are used as cottages by summer vacationers.
The LaHave Islands Marine Museum seeks to preserve the memories and artifacts of the past and put them on display for all to see and remember. We are open daily from 10 am to 5 pm in the summer from June 1st to September 1. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. The museum can also be opened outside of these times by appointment.
