Welcome to the LaHave Islands Marine Museum Website.
The LaHave Islands Marine Museum is a museum with artifacts and information on the history of the in-shore fisheries and life on the LaHave Islands in Nova Scotia, Canada. Through this website, you can learn about the LaHave Islands and the surrounding area. You can also see photographs of some of the artifacts we have on display at the museum.
In the past, the LaHave Islands was a small fishing community about 30 kilometers from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. It relied on fishing, both in-shore and off-shore, for its prosperity and it was hard to find someone who wasn’t involved in the fishing industry in their day to day lives.
Today, the fishing industry has died down and most of the homes on the islands are used as cottages by summer vacationers.
The LaHave Islands Marine Museum seeks to preserve the memories and artifacts of the past and put them on display for all to see and remember. We are open daily from 10 am to 5 pm in the summer from June 1st to September 1. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. The museum can also be opened outside of these times by appointment.
The First Capital of all of New France from 1632 - 1636.
Before beginning your walk on beautiful Fort Point, imagine that today’s date is May 8, 1604. Look southwest across Dublin Bay toward the Atlantic Ocean. Beyond the islands you may see the good ship Le Don de Dieu as it drops anchor for the first time in the New World. Samuel de Champlain, the man who would change Europe’s understanding of this vast continent, stands on the foredeck sketching the first of his famous maps. Do you see him waving to you?
Here at the Fabulous Attic we offer a wide variety of home decor items, refurbished furniture, antiques, gifts, crafts made from driftwood and other natural materials and much more. we are a small shop 2km south on Hwy 331 from Lahave Bakery
Elmwood Winery is a one hectare small farm winery, growing mainly hybrid grapes, located in Pine Grove.
The vines are grown without use of herbicides or toxic sprays. The grapes are all hand harvested and the wine is made in small batches.
We only use grapes that are grown in our vineyard or from nearby growers in Lunenburg County.
L’Acadie blanc is our main white wine. The reds are either Leon Millot, Baco noir or a blend with Lucy Kuhlmann from Burns Hill vineyard in Upper LaHave.
We are certified with Certified Naturally Grown (CNG), a farmer driven organization
We also make mead from our own honey. Mead will be available again in 2017.
We are open on weekends from noon to 5.00 pm.
We are located at 105 Craig Chandler Drive, off the Harold Whynot Road (past Osprey Ridge golf course).
While visiting the south shore, you will want to include a visit to DesBrisay Museum. Learn about Bridgewater’s growth as a lumber town, and the terrible fire of 1899 that nearly destroyed it. Explore the First Nations Gallery with its famous porcupine quill cradle, and learn more about Mi’kmaq culture. Appreciate folk art from Lunenburg County artisans; and discover some of the oddities collected by Judge Mather Byles DesBrisay in the late 1800’s. The research centre is a valuable resource for genealogists and historians, and the gift shop carries a good selection of books on the local area. Kids are encouraged to be ‘history detectives’ as they tour the museum and enjoy kid friendly activities throughout the museum. Situated in Woodland Gardens Park, with walking trails, a duck pond and picnic area, there is plenty of free parking, and the museum is certified Senior Friendly. We are looking forward to your visit!
